postheadericon Dr. Donohue: White skin patches can be treated, hidden

Dear Dr. Donohue • My grandson developed vitiligo when he was 6 years old. His mother has it. It breaks my heart when I see him. He is now 15 and in high school. The condition is affecting him emotionally. My son and daughter-in-law have taken him to the best doctors in New York. They used creams and special lights. Is there something else we can do for him?

Vitiligo is patches of depigmented skin, white skin. Sometimes the patches are very large and cover much of the body. Melanocytes have disappeared from the skin. Melanocytes are cells containing the pigment melanin. Dark skin has many melanocytes; light skin, fewer. Aside from burning easily, vitiliginous skin isn't usually a health problem. It is, however, a huge psychological and emotional problem.

It's believed that vitiligo is an autoimmune illness, one where the immune system has turned against melanocytes. Sometimes it's seen in association with other immune disorders, such as thyroid malfunction, type 1 diabetes, adrenal gland failure and pernicious anemia. Most often, it occurs on its own. Heredity does have a role in causing it.

postheadericon Does Your Kid Prefer White Skin Over Black?

Does your kid have biases when it comes to skin color? A new CNN pilot study reveals that white children have an overwhelming bias towards white, while black children also have a bias towards white, just not as strongly as the bias shown by white children. Does this translate to your kid? Should you be worried?Who’s the Prettiest?

One hundred and thirty-three children from New York and Georgia, ranging from about 5 to 9 years old, participated in the study. The study placed a child in a room with a researcher and showed the child a picture of several identical cartoon girls, the only difference being the range in their skin tones, from light to dark. When the researcher asked questions like “Who is the prettiest girl?” or “Who is the smartest girl?” the white children tended to point to a cartoon girl that had similar skin tone to herself. When asked who the ugliest or meanest girl was, the white children tended to point to the cartoon with the darkest skin tone.

postheadericon In Chicago

What harm is there in using a skin bleaching cream to lighten your skin or banish age spots? If the skin lightening cream you use contains mercury, then the harm to the human body can be devastating. The FDA announced Friday that it will investigate incidents of creams containing mercury found on Chicago store shelves.

According to the Chicago Tribune, an investigative report the paper published May 18 spurred the FDA to action. During its investigation, the Tribune sent 50 jars of cream that had been purchased in the city or online to a lab for testing.

The paper states that of the jars sent, “five had more than 6,000 parts per million of mercury —- enough to potentially cause kidney damage over time, according to a medical expert.” Mercury poisoning also may result in neurological damage.

postheadericon White Skin (2004)

A Nutshell Review: La Peau Blanche aka White Skin, 19 March 2005

The title of this film doesn't give you a clue as to what it wants to tell. “White Skin” opens with a conversation between two friends, Thierry and Henri (yeah, those of you who know me will know that I am grinning at this – Arsenal's star player is called Thierry Henry, but no, it doesn't make any inference here), they're talking about being coloured (Henri is black, Theirry is white), and touch on racism.

This film doesn't pretend that it's not preaching about this topic, but at times when they talk about it, you can't seem to help but think the filmmakers are trying, though without success, to deliver some kind of message across. Peppered throughout the show are conversations that touch upon skin colour, race, “The Original Man”, etc.

postheadericon Acne Treatment For Black Skin

The black men and women find acne treatment for black skin rather difficult. Acne is a skin problem which is common and consists of blackheads, whiteheads and also some big boil-like nodules or cysts.

Teenagers are by far the most affected by the disease which also affects women in their thirties. In puberty, acne occurs due to the changes in the hormone levels. With time and patience's, acne gets healed by itself in most of the cases.

Acne affects the hair follicles and also the oil secreting glands in the skin. It usually occurs on the face, chest, arms and back. They have different types of 'spots', like whiteheads, pustules, blackheads and nodules.

postheadericon Microdermabrasion on Black Skin

Can Black People Have Microderm Abrasion Treatment?

When my friend Rhiana found out I was building a website on micro dermabrasion, she asked me whether the procedure was safe to have on black skin. She is Afro American and wanted to try a rejuvenating treatment for the fine lines around her mouth. Luckily, having researched the topic before, I was in a position to assure her that both professional and at-home micro derm abrasion are safe on dark and black skin.

Before continuing, you might want to read about the top home microdermabrasion kits reviewed and compared by myself and my friends (I really like home microderm systems because they are convenient to use and don't break the bank) or find out more about doctor-performed microdermabrasion.

Palmer's Skin Success Regular Eventone Fade Cream Regular 2.7oz. Review

Great cream for ridding spots.

“I had a terrible uneven skin due to a birthmark. This birthmark had always bothered me even as a kid. The mark was all over my left arm, it really stood out, because my skin is milky white, while the mark was brown. Made it hard to wear short sleeves. Trust me, if one arm is brown while the rest of the body is white, that person will properly go out to buy bleaching or lightening creams too.
